I am in awe of Lina Vezzani-Katano. Her ability to focus and stay grounded. I am not talking about avoiding the typical daily distractions, but her ability to courageously stand in a ring and take a punch. She is a boxer. She must remain present every second in every round of the match. So she works hard to stay present for every second that she trains. That is different from my mindset of running a number of miles every week to increase the base as I would train for a marathon. I am rarely present every second unless I am avoiding potholes. My mind drifts off as I run planning my day about or solving a problem in my mind. Getting to know her meant understanding the difference. That was her gift to me. Thank you Lina for inspiring me to remember that microseconds matter, too.

LIVING FULL CIRCLE EXCERPT
I am an energetic, twenty-nine-year-old female who trains thirteen hours per week for boxing. I’m also certified as a holistic practitioner and am taking an online course to become a UX (user experience) designer. I practice yoga and meditation and am stitching it all together to see a whole picture of what health can be for me. I started boxing because I felt stuck in my life— stagnant, frustrated, and unchallenged. Boxing training requires intense focus—[and] my day is structured with rituals to reach my goals. [But] I get called-out by my coaches for “jumping” while I am sparring because they see that I am not grounding myself. Without “rooting” my feet into the ring floor, I lose my balance, which translates into a fall from an unexpected blow, losing full strength in my punch, or being unable to dodge punches given that I deplete my energy more quickly. Boxing is a mental sport, so I must summon my full focus on demand and sustain it. That can be challenging if I am not taking care of my whole body, and sometimes focus is hard to summon immediately on cue. Therefore, focusing on the basics, gesturing with my feet and hands (see Patience Hand Gesture, page 40), and recharging my root energy are key
